The calcaneus, the largest of the seven tarsal bones, is located on the lower back of the foot and forms the heel (heel of the foot).

One study reported that among 752 calcaneal fractures that occurred over a 10-year period, the annual incidence of calcaneal fractures was 11.5 per 100,000 population, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.4:1. 72% of these fractures were caused by falls.
